Hyacinth

I've always wanted to do this, so when I found a special 'forcing vase' at an op shop a few months back, I grabbed it, and bought myself a hyacinth bulb. It's taken some weeks to sprout ... isn't it gorgeous? And I love the scent.

From early June ...

And a few weeks later ...

This is super easy to do, here's some different instructions on how to go about it, if you want a bit of springtime inside too! I didn't follow any instructions, though, so I didn't keep it in the fridge, or a dark cupboard or anything else. I just sat it on my desk in my office (which isn't frightfully sunny or warm) and it did its thing.

  2. What I love is that you knew you were looking at a 'special forcing vase' when you saw it in the Op Shop - I would have seen it and gone WTF is that????

  4. I love hyacinths. They smell like easter to me. I have several in the garden and they come back smelling nice every year.

  5. What a scentual treat! I don't think you had to force it though. I think you just coaxed it to co-operate with you. A little rational persuasion, a little sweet reason, and a bit of gracious welcome and voila - it pays you back with fragrant gratitude!

  7. I think forcing vases are so cool. But hyacinths are too strong for me - wow, can they put out scent, especially at night! I love them outdoors, where their fragrance is diluted.

  8. I can almost smell it from here! I'm with Penny that it's amazing you knew what you were looking at when you saw the forcing vase. Never would have a clue!

  10. Wow! It looks great! And hyacinths smell so good, too.

I tried forcing a bulb once and it just got all rotten on the bottom. I kept the vase though!
